Alexander Alexandrovich Prokhorenko

Alexander Alexandrovich Prokhorenko ( Russian Александр Александрович Прохоренко * 22. June 1990 in Gorodki , Tjulganski rayon , Orenburg , Soviet Union ; † 17th March 2016 in Palmyra , Syria ) was a Russian soldier in the fight against the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS). He died during the liberation of Palmyra and was posthumously honored with the Order of Hero of the Russian Federation .

Prokhorenko comes from a working class family and graduated from the middle school in his home village Gorodki in 2007. In August 2007 he joined the Russian armed forces and attended the Orenburg College of Air Defense ( Оренбургское высшее зенитное ракетное училище ; Orenburgskoje wysscheje senitnoje raketnoje utschilischtsche). As part of the resolution of the university Prokhorenko was 2,008 at the Military Academy of Air Defense of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation ( Военная академия войсковой противовоздушной обороны Вооружённых Сил Российской Федерации ; Wojennaja akademija woiskowoi protiwowosduschnoi Oborony Wooruschonnych Sil Rossiyskoy Federazii) in Smolensk staggered and stepped in the wake of the special forces of the Russian Federation ( ССО ВС Росси́и ; SSO WS Rossii).

Alexander Prokhorenko was last as a first lieutenant ( старший лейтенант ; starschi leitenant) in action for the special unit GRU Spetsnaz . According to the Defense Ministry , Prokhorenko was surrounded by Islamist fighters of the Islamic State as a forward observer on a special mission near Palmyra. He is said to have reported his position to the Russian Air Force and, due to the hopeless situation, ordered an air strike on his location. Prokhorenko was killed in the air strike along with an unknown number of jihadists. He was the sixth Russian killed in Syria, leaving behind his pregnant wife.

On April 11, 2016, Prokhorenko was posthumously awarded the Order of Hero of the Russian Federation by ukase № 169 of President Vladimir Putin . Friedrich Schmidt ( Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ) sees Russian reporting as Putin's propaganda tool. The British Daily Mirror named Prokhorenko for his actions as "Russian Rambo".

Prokhorenko's body was recovered with the help of Kurdish Peshmerga and transferred to Moscow on April 29th . Prokhorenko was buried with military honors on May 6, 2016 in the Gorodki cemetery. The day of the funeral has been declared a day of mourning in Orenburg Oblast.

In the cities of Grozny and Orenburg streets were named after him and memorial plaques were put up. A monument to him was erected in the Italian Vagli Sotto .
