Alexander Stephan (born September 15, 1986 in Erlangen ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper .

Career

Stephan started playing soccer at ASV Niederndorf from Herzogenaurach in Central Franconia . As a 9-year-old he joined the youth club . At 1. FC Nürnberg he went through the youth teams and in December 2004 he played for the German U-19 team against Luxembourg, a position that Manuel Neuer and Florian Fromlowitz usually shared in the DFB team . In 2004 Stephan became the substitute goalkeeper of the second team, for which he was used ten times in 2005/06. In 2006/07 he was a regular goalkeeper with 33 games. In addition, in 2006, at the age of 19, he became the third goalkeeper in the licensed team, taking the place of Philipp Tschauner, who had migrated to TSV 1860 Munich . He got a contract until 2008.

For the 2007/08 season Raphael Schäfer left 1. FC Nürnberg, Jaromír Blažek was a new addition. However, since it was not yet clear at the time of the number assignment, whether Blažek or Daniel Klewer should become a regular player, Alexander Stephan received the shirt number 1 (before he had the 30), although he remained the second substitute player. According to the DFL rule, there must be a number one player in the squad, and Blažek also wanted to keep the 29 he already had at Sparta Prague. Stephan kept the number 30 in the amateur squad and was the first goalkeeper again with 18 appearances. In the remaining 16 games, Andreas Sponsel stood between the posts. This season he was promoted to the regional league.

On October 10, 2007, Stephan was able to play as number one: He played with the professional team away in a " friendship derby " for charity. The game ended 3: 1 (3: 0) for SpVgg Greuther Fürth . In the further course of the season he sat several times in Bundesliga games on the bench, as both Blažek and Klewer had injury breaks. For the following season , Raphael Schäfer returned to Nuremberg, whereupon Stephan got the number 30 again. In the Regionalliga 2008/09 he played twelve times.

Before the 2009/10 Bundesliga season , Klewer became a stand-by professional . That is why Stephan was now regularly on the bench of the first team and rarely plays in the regional league. Stephan had his first Bundesliga appearances on November 28, 2009 in the home game against SC Freiburg and in the remaining three first half games, when he replaced the suspended shepherd. Although he did not do badly himself, there were four painful defeats with a total of 12 goals conceded. In the second half of the season he was used again when he came on for the injured Raphael Schäfer in stoppage time.

In the 2010/11 season Stephan went again as a substitute goalkeeper behind Schäfer and was only used on the seventh matchday in the 2-1 win against FC Schalke 04 .

In 2011/12 Patrick Rakovsky challenged him for the substitute bench. The 18-year-old newcomer was number two from the start of the season and was also given priority when Schäfer was seriously injured. Nevertheless, Stephan got another chance when Rakovsky was injured shortly afterwards. He played seven games as the new number one and when Schäfer's return came too early on the following day, he took the place between the posts for an eighth time in the second half. This 1: 2 home defeat against SC Freiburg on November 5, 2011 was Stephan's last game with the professional team.

Although he remained number two until the end of the season and then extended his expiring contract for another year, he was not used in the 2012/13 season and on May 18, 2013 1. FC Nürnberg announced on its homepage that Alexander Stephan will end his career as a professional footballer after the season and will only play for the second team in the future. After the 2015/16 season , he finally ended his career.
