Alexander von der Goltz

Alexander Georg Theodor Karl Freiherr von der Goltz (born July 13, 1832 in Düsseldorf , † November 24, 1912 in Strasbourg ) was a German lawyer and politician .

origin

His grandfather was Alexander Wilhelm von der Goltz (1774-1820). His parents were the Prussian lieutenant colonel and writer Alexander Friedrich Philipp Wilhelm von der Goltz (* May 7, 1800, † April 28, 1870) and his wife Anna (Johanne) Marie Ottilie Göbel (* June 30, 1804, † May 22, 1864 ). The theologian and church politician Hermann von der Goltz was his brother.

Life

After attending grammar school in Koblenz , he studied law in Bonn . During his studies in 1853 he became a member of the Frankonia fraternity in Bonn . After starting his professional life as an assessor for the government in Koblenz in 1859 , he became district administrator of the Mettmann district from 1861 to 1872 . From 1870 to 1872 he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives , where after some time he joined the Liberal Center. From 1872 he was district director in the Saargemünd district , from 1880 Ministerialrat in the Interior Department and from 1882 in the Justice Department, where he was responsible as head of the prison system and compulsory education. From 1901 to 1907 he was district director in the Diedenhofen-Ost district , then in the Zabern district until 1912 and then in the Strasbourg district until his death . In 1902 he became President of the Imperial Council in the realm of Alsace-Lorraine . He became a real secret councilor and an honorary doctorate in theology (Dr. theol. Hc). He was a member of the board of directors of the Church of Augsburg Confession and President of the Lower Alsatian Welfare Association.

Von der Goltz married on November 2, 1861 in Wernigerode Albertine Mathilde Auguste Charlotte von Sommerfeld (1835–1906), daughter of the Prussian Major General Ernst von Sommerfeld and Juliane Gebser. The couple had three sons:
