Ernst Julius von Sommerfeld (born August 8, 1795 in Koppen, Züllichau district, † December 26, 1863 in Wernigerode ) was a Prussian major general and head of the disability department in the War Ministry .

Life

origin

Ernst was a son of Ernst von Sommerfeld (1758-1825) and his wife Dorothea, born von Knobelsdorff (1769-1807) from the Tauchel family. His father was a Prussian captain a. D. , District Administrator , Landscape Director and Mr. auf Koppen. The Prussian Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Sommerfeld (1801–1871) was his younger brother.

Military career

At the beginning of the Wars of Liberation on February 10, 1813, Sommerfeld joined the Guard-Jäger-Battalion of the Prussian Army as a volunteer hunter . He took part in the battles at Großgörschen and Bautzen and in mid-June 1813 advanced to secondary lieutenant . After he was transferred to the 6th Reserve Infantry Regiment in mid-September 1813 , Sommerfeld was so badly wounded in the Battle of Leipzig that he could no longer participate in the rest of the war. After his recovery he came to the 8th replacement battalion on April 10, 1815 and to the Berlin Cadet House on July 9, 1815 . At the end of April 1818 he was aggregated to the 5th Garrison Battalion in Küstrin and used as an adjutant at the commandant's office there . From April 5, 1819, Sommerfeld was assigned to the 2nd Department in the War Ministry until he left the army on April 14, 1820 with a disability salary.

On July 30, 1824, Sommerfeld was re-employed in the army and transferred to the Luxembourg governorate as an adjutant. By the end of March 1830 he was promoted to captain, at the end of September 1830 he was aggregated to the adjutantage and classified as a major on March 30, 1841. On October 16, 1844 he was aggregated to the 29th Infantry Regiment and used from January 21, 1845 to February 19, 1851 as commander of the 8th Combined Reserve Battalion in Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein . Subsequently, when he was appointed head of the Secret War Chancellery, he was transferred to the War Ministry in Berlin. In this position, Sommerfeld advanced to lieutenant colonel at the end of March 1853 and on June 15, 1856 he was appointed head of the department for the disabled. Mid-October 1856 was followed by his promotion to colonel , and on 31 May 1859 he was awarded the character as a major general. Under awarded the Red Eagle II. He married Juliane Gebser (1800–1844), daughter of the bailiff Friedrich August Theodor Gebser , on October 2, 1825 in Wernigerode . Her sister Auguste (1794–1882) was married to the politician Moritz August von Bethmann-Hollweg . The couple had several children:
