Wilhelm Julius Leopold von Sommerfeld (born July 5, 1801 in Koppen, Züllichau district, † January 3, 1871 in Fraustadt ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Wilhelm was a son of Ernst von Sommerfeld (1758–1825) and his wife Dorothea, born von Knobelsdorff (1769–1807) from the Tauchel family. His father was a Prussian captain a. D. , District Administrator , Landscape Director and Mr. auf Koppen. The Prussian Major General Ernst von Sommerfeld (1795–1863) was his older brother.

Military career

Sommerfeld visited the Berlin Cadet House and on April 10, 1819 was transferred to the 6th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a Second Lieutenant . For further training he graduated from the General War School in 1822/25 and was assigned to the topographic office in 1829/31 . As Prime Lieutenant , Sommerfeld was regimental adjutant in 1835/38. He was then commanded to Glogau in mid-October 1838 as an adjutant of the 9th Infantry Brigade . With promotion to captain and the appointment of company commander , Sommerfeld returned to service on June 15, 1841. At the end of May 1848 he was promoted to major and took part in the suppression of the Baden Revolution as commander of the II battalion the following year . For this, Sommerfeld was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV Class with Swords. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel at the end of March 1853 , was appointed commander of the 7th Infantry Regiment in Posen on April 4, 1857 and promoted to colonel a few days later . He was promoted to major general on May 31, 1859, and was transferred to officers from the army before he became commander of the 29th Infantry Brigade in Cologne on June 14, 1859 . At the same time, from October 23, 1859, Sommerfeld also had command of the Prussian occupation in Frankfurt am Main . Left in this command, he became commander of the 32nd Infantry Brigade on January 31, 1860 . In this position, Sommerfeld received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with swords on the ring, in May 1860 and the Schwarzburg Cross of Honor, 1st class, in early December 1861 . January 29, 1863 to January 3, 1864, he was commander of Szczecin then and was awarded the character as a lieutenant general with board for disposition made.

Sommerfeld married on May 28, 1839 in Riebnitz near Krossen with Maria von Hanneken (1807-1886), daughter of Major General Ludwig von Hanneken (1780-1854). The following children were born from the marriage:
