Gustav von Sommerfeld

Gustav Ernst Julius Wilhelm von Sommerfeld (born March 9, 1837 in Luxembourg ; † January 9, 1905 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Gustav was a son of the Prussian major general Ernst von Sommerfeld (1795–1863) and his first wife Juliane, née Gebser (1800–1844). The district president of Stettin Hugo von Sommerfeld (1833–1912) was his older brother.

Military career

After his high school Sommerfeld entered on 10 November 1855 as a cadet in the 2nd Guards Regiment walk the Prussian army and became the beginning of January 1857 second lieutenant . In 1862 he became a regimental adjutant, rose to prime lieutenant in mid-December 1864, and in 1866 was leader of the 3rd company of the 4th battalion during the German War . From Leipzig it advanced in a south-westerly direction towards Bayreuth and was supposed to operate in the rear of the Bavarians in order to clear the Main Army . While being promoted to captain , Sommerfeld became chief of the 8th Company on March 22, 1868 . When mobilizing on the occasion of the war against France , he was commanded as an adjutant to the high command of the 3rd Army under Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm . In this capacity, Sommerfeld took part in the battles near Weissenburg , Wörth , Beaumont and Sedan and the siege of Paris .

He was awarded the Iron Cross II. Class and after the peace treaty at the end of April 1872, under the aggregation of the General Staff of the Army, he was sent to the embassy in Brussels . By mid-September 1880, Sommerfeld was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on January 25, 1881, he was appointed first director of the War Academy under the position of the General Staff of the Army . On July 23, 1881, he received the rank and fees of regimental commander. On January 9, 1883, he was appointed personal aide to the Crown Prince, leaving the General Staff of the Army in the same way. Promoted to Colonel in this capacity in mid-April 1885 , Sommerfeld was given his command at the beginning of November 1886 to serve with the General Staff of the Mainz governorate . From February 14 to April 16, 1888, he was briefly in command of Altona and the troops stationed in Hamburg . Afterwards, Sommerfeld was allowed to leave with his pension and his previous uniform .

In recognition of his services, he received the Commendation of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern in May 1888 and the character of Major General on October 18, 1895 . He died unmarried in Berlin.
