Franz Alexander Georg Albrecht Ernst Eberhard Alfred Arthur Graf zu Erbach-Erbach and von Wartenberg-Roth, Herr zu Breuberg, Wildenstein, Steinbach, Curl and Ostermannshofen (born September 16, 1891 in Erbach (Odenwald) ; † January 21, 1952 in Eulbach ) was a member of the noble house of Erbach and was the last representative of the Erbach-Erbach rulership in the first chamber of the estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . Since 1940 he was senior of the Erbach-Erbach line of the Grafenhaus.

Alexander zu Erbach-Erbach was the third son of Count Arthur zu Erbach-Erbach (1849-1908) and Marie Friederike, née Princess zu Bentheim-Tecklenburg (1857-1939). He was married to Christa geb. von Zülow (1894–1962), daughter of the Prussian colonel and district commander Adalbert von Zülow and his wife Wilhelmine, née Szeliga Zychlin von Zychlinski. Alexander had two older brothers, Konrad (1881–1940) and Eberhard (1886–1917), and two sons, Eberhard (1922–1944) and Franz (1925–2015).

Life

After private tuition and attending secondary school in Michelstadt and high schools in Darmstadt and Büdingen , Alexander enrolled at the Royal Technical University of Charlottenburg , but in 1914, after the outbreak of war, he volunteered as a volunteer without having completed a degree.

Shortly before the end of the German monarchy, he took over the mandate of the state rule Erbach-Erbach in the first chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1917 and 1918, representing his incapacitated cousin Count Erasmus zu Erbach-Erbach (1883-1920) by power of attorney Guardian Prince Alexander zu Erbach-Schönberg . His older brother Eberhard, who died in a railway accident in Transylvania in February 1917 , had noticed it before .

After the end of the war, Alexander returned to the Odenwald and lived at the Eulbach hunting lodge . Here he temporarily managed the property of the count's family. At the beginning of the Second World War he served as an officer in the 6th Cavalry Regiment in Darmstadt from 1939 to 1943. After the death of his eldest brother Konrad, he became head of the Erbach-Erbach family in 1940.

Social Commitment

Alexander zu Erbach-Erbach was one of the founders of the Hessian Automobile Club in 1922 and its president from 1927 to 1931. In the Odenwald he was involved in equestrian sports as an active member of the Odenwälder equestrian and racing club (founded in 1911), of which he was temporarily president. Until 1933 he was district leader of the conservative Stahlhelm soldiers' association , to which he had belonged since 1929. As a knight of honor he belonged to the Hessian Cooperative of the Order of St. John .
