Alexis zu Bentheim and Steinfurt
Prince Alexis zu Bentheim and Steinfurt , full name Alexis Carl Ernst Louis Ferdinand Eugen Prince Bernhard zu Bentheim and Steinfurt (born November 17, 1845 in Burgsteinfurt ; † January 21, 1919 there ) was a German nobleman and Prussian lieutenant general , and since 1890 chief of the House of Bentheim and Steinfurt .
Life
Alexis zu Bentheim and Steinfurt was a son of Prince Ludwig zu Bentheim and Steinfurt (1812–1890) and his wife Bertha, née Princess zu Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld (1818–1888).
He attended high school in Burgsteinfurt and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he was a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn . In May 1866 he became second lieutenant in the Hanover Guards Hussar Regiment and took part in the battle of Langensalza during the war against Prussia in the same year . As such, Bentheim was accepted into the Prussian Army on January 4, 1868 with a patent dated March 25, 1867 and employed in the King's Hussar Regiment (1st Rheinisches) No. 7 . With this regiment Bentheim fought in 1870/71 in the war against France in the battles at Gravelotte , Amiens , at the Hallue and at Bapaume . He also took part in the siege of Metz and received the Iron Cross 2nd class.
In 1873 he was promoted to prime lieutenant , in 1875 to captain and squadron chief in the regiment of the Gardes du Corps . On November 11, 1884 joined with the character as a Major to the officers à la suite of the Army, 1892 lieutenant colonel , 1895 Colonel 1899 Major General . In February 1902 Wilhelm II awarded Bentheim the uniform of the Gardes du Corps regiment. In addition, on September 11, 1907, he received the character of Lieutenant General.
As early as 1890, Bentheim succeeded his father as head of the Princely House. He was a hereditary member of the Prussian manor house and the Württemberg Chamber of Class Lords . He was also the commander of the Hanoverian Cooperative of the Order of St. John . His successor as head of the family was his son Viktor Adolf zu Bentheim-Steinfurt (1883–1961).
Marriage and offspring
In 1881 he married Pauline zu Waldeck and Pyrmont (1855–1925). The marriage had eight children.
