Alfred von Glehn
Alfred Constantin Edmundowitsch of Glehn ( Russian Альфред Константин Эдмундович фон Глен ; born January 6, jul. / 18th January 1858 greg. In Tallinn , † 1927 in Berlin ) was a Baltic German cellist , conductor and university teachers .
Life
Alfred von Glehn, son of the doctor Edmund Theophil von Glehn (1800–1884) and cousin of the British engineer Alfred de Glehn , studied cello at the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1877–1881 with Karl Juljewitsch Dawidow . He then played in the orchestra of the Italian Opera in St. Petersburg . He was a brilliant and subtle cello virtuoso with successful appearances in Leipzig , Dresden , Vienna , Paris and London . He played in a trio with Taneyev , Siloti , Safonow , von Auer and Hřímalý .
From 1884–1890, von Glehn led the cello, double bass and chamber orchestra classes at the Kharkov Music Academy . In 1888 he organized a student symphony orchestra at Kharkov University and became its conductor. In 1890, at Safonov's suggestion, he was appointed professor for the chamber orchestra and violoncello classes at the Moscow Conservatory and soon became assistant to the rector and a member of the IRMO quartet . Von Glehn's teaching methods were later used by Rostropovich . According to a design by Glehns, the violin maker Evgeni Witatschek built a tenor viola in 1911 , which was used in conjunction with Taneyev , Wassilenko and Solotarjow .
In 1921 von Glehn left Moscow and settled in Tallinn, where he worked as a teacher and interpreter. From 1925 he taught at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory in Berlin .
Michail Evsejewitsch Bukinik , Anna Saulowna Lyuboschiz , Konstantin Alexandrowitsch Minjar-Belorutschew , Kazimierz Wiłkomirski , Gregor Piatigorsky and Alexander Abramowitsch Krein were among the most important students of Glehns .
