Behind the Spotlight is a 1979 American feature film that looks behind the scenes of musical productions .

action

The choreographer Joe Gideon is a successful director and choreographer on Broadway , just preparing a new show. His ex-wife Audrey Paris, with whom he has a close professional relationship and responsibility for their daughter Michelle, also plays in this show. His lover is also a dancer. Gideon is exhausted from professional and private stress and conflicts with his wives that arise from his notorious infidelity and the feeling that he is not enough. In his day and night dreams death appears to him in the person of the beautiful Angelique. Only to her does he open up and tell of his past, the meaning of his art and the nonsense of death. The workaholic eventually has a heart attack. After receiving an anesthetic in the hospital, it seems like he's staging a show featuring the women of his life. The operation succeeds, but shortly afterwards he has another heart attack that leads to death.

background

The film Behind the Spotlight is on the one hand a film with fascinating choreographies by the exceptional artist Bob Fosse, which gives precise insights into the rehearsals on Broadway, and on the other hand an irritating self-portrait. Roy Scheider as Joe Gideon is Bob Fosse. Ann Reinking, Fosse's longtime lover, plays Kate Jagger. Fosse himself suffered a heart attack during rehearsals. He processed these experiences in this film. The only difference: he lets his Joe Gideon die. However, years later, shortly before the premiere of a Broadway show, Bob Fosse also suffered his second heart attack, from which he died in 1987. The original name of the film is All that Jazz . This stands for the term all the stuff in English .
