Allium horvatii is a plant from the genus allium ( Allium ) in the subfamily of the leek plants (Allioideae).

description

Vegetative characteristics

Allium horvatii grows as a perennial herbaceous plant . A short rhizome is formed as a permanent organ . With a length of 4.5 to 5.0 centimeters and a diameter of 0.4 to 0.8, rarely up to 1 centimeter, the "onion" is oblong-ovoid and forms compact groups with 30 to 50 "onions". The onion skin is slightly striped along its length, the outer onion skin is dark brown to black, the inner dark red-brown to gray-purple. The stem is usually 10 to 35 (5 to 47) centimeters high and 0.9 to 1.5 (up to 2) millimeters thick. The simple leaves cover the bottom 1/6 of the stem and turn green at the end of the flowering period.

Generative characteristics

Inflorescence; The stamens that protrude far beyond the flower cover are clearly visible

The flowering period extends from July to September. The two durable bracts are inconsistent, with the longer being 12 to 15 (10 to 18) millimeters long (sometimes significantly longer). The umbellate inflorescence is almost hemispherical during the flowering period and reaches a diameter of 15 to 20 millimeters during the flowering period; at the fruit time it is larger. The flower stalks are 2 to 5 millimeters long at flowering time.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. The inflorescence is bell-shaped to wide open. The six bracts are usually 4 (3.5 to 4.5) millimeters long and 1 to 1.5 millimeters wide and are yellowish-white with green veins, sometimes slightly pink with greenish veins. The stamens protrude far beyond the flower envelope. The thread-like, white anthers are 3.5 to 5.2 millimeters in length longer than the bracts. The fresh anthers are 0.6 to 1.1 millimeters long and yellow; completely dried anthers are about 0.6 millimeters long and dark yellow. The ovary is greenish. The seeds black, angular and about 3 millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

Allium horvatii is distributed in Italy , Slovenia , Croatia , Bosnia and Montenegro in the coastal mountains of the Dinarides , on the Dalmatian islands, the islands of the Kvarner Bay and on the Apennine peninsula at altitudes from 0 to about 2000 meters.

Systematics

The first description of Allium horvatii done by Andrija-Željko Lovrić in Austrian Botanical Magazine , Vol 119, 1971 pp 569, it was published 1972nd

This circumadriatic species forms the westernmost leek species from the Central Asian section of orioprasone . It was taxonomically spun off from Allium saxatile in 2015 .
