Aloysio José Leal Penna

Aloysio José Leal Penna SJ (born February 7, 1933 in Piquete , São Paulo , Brazil , † June 19, 2012 in Belo Horizonte ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Botucatu .

Life

Aloysio José Leal Penna joined the religious order of the Jesuits in Nova Friburgo on February 1, 1950 . After his Jesuit training (1952/54) he studied philosophy (1955/57) at the Colégio Máximo Anchieta in Rio de Janeiro and completed a course of study for teaching. He was prefect at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and taught geography (1958/60). From 1961 to 1963 he studied theology at the Colégio Máximo Cristo Rei in São Leopoldo . He received by Archbishop Hélder Câmara on 21 December 1963, the ordination and put on 15 August 1966 at the French Paray-le-Monial the profession from. He graduated from the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1969 with a degree in spiritual theology.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Paulo Afonso on May 21, 1984 . The Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia , Avelar Cardinal Brandão Vilela , donated him episcopal ordination on July 22nd of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Luciano Pedro Mendes de Almeida SJ, auxiliary bishop in São Paulo , and Jackson Berenguer Prado , emeritus bishop of Paulo Afonso.

On October 30, 1987, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Bauru . When Cândido Rubens Padín's OSB retired on September 4, 1990, he succeeded him as Bishop of Paulo Afonso. On June 7, 2000, he was named Archbishop of Botucatu . On November 19, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation.

He was a member of the Regional Conference South of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB). At the national level he was responsible for pastoral care for children and the elderly. He was also involved in pastoral care in the Council of Latin American Bishops.
