Alphons Johann Gustav von Cramer , also de Cramer (* 1834 in Izmir , Ottoman Empire , † January 4, 1884 in Pegli - Multedo near Genoa , Liguria , Kingdom of Italy ), was an Austrian genre and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Von Cramer, scion of an Austro-Greek merchant family from Smyrna , grew up in Vienna and initially also worked as a merchant. From 1860 he received his first artistic instruction in Florence and Padua . Then he went to study in Paris and in 1862 to Düsseldorf , where he became a pupil of the portrait painter Wilhelm Sohn and belonged to the artists' association Malkasten . Resident there until 1876, he made several trips to Greece and Asia Minor . In Constantinople he painted three times the portrait of Sultan Abdülaziz , who honored him with the Mecidiye Order . His most famous work is the altarpiece of John the Baptist in St. John's Cathedral in Izmir. The painting Die Belauschten , created in 1873, is owned by the Düsseldorf Museum Kunstpalast .

In the style of his teacher Wilhelm Sohn, Cramer often chose subjects for his works that were typical of Düsseldorf genre painting . He mainly painted figure pictures that can be assigned to the history or costume genre (e.g. Rendezvous in Venice ). In addition, influenced by his travels, he created some pictures with scenes from the life of other peoples (e.g. Greek family ). Cramer showed his works at various large art exhibitions, except in Düsseldorf, among others, in Dresden at the Academic Art Exhibition (1868) and in the Munich Glass Palace (1876).
