action

April Epner is 39 years old and a primary school teacher. In her marriage to her teacher colleague Ben, she wants nothing more than a child. But the wish remains unfulfilled. Adoption is out of the question for her because she was adopted herself.

One day your life changes suddenly. Her husband left her without a word and her adoptive mother Trudy also dies. She meets Frank, the father of one of her students. The mentally ailing man has been divorced for four weeks. In this emotional chaos, the news of her birth mother, Bernice, suddenly bursts, and she really wants to get to know her. At the first meeting, it turns out that Bernice is a well-known TV presenter who tells her that her birth father is Steve McQueen . Very reserved and suspicious, April ends the contact for the time being.

A tentative romance develops between April and Frank, shaped by everyone's bad experiences. Frank advises her to get a hair from Bernice so that she can do a DNA analysis . It also becomes clear that Steve McQueen cannot be her father. But April's brother Freddy, who practices as a doctor, tells her that Bernice is actually her mother based on the DNA analysis. Her mother confesses the lie to her and explains that her father forced her to put her up for adoption after three days. A friendship develops between them.

After a passionate night with Frank, she realizes that she is pregnant. However, Ben is the father, whom she then visits and asks for his fatherly duties. A visit to the doctor with Frank and Ben shows that everything is okay. Immediately afterwards, April and Ben attack each other in their car, even though she is clearly in love with Frank. However, he finds out and ends the relationship.

A few weeks later, April learns that the unborn child no longer has a heartbeat. Deeply shaken, she has now lost everything. She also lied to Bernice repeatedly, because April was only given up for adoption after a year because she was a burden for Bernice. April then asks her to pay for an artificial insemination. But this too is unsuccessful.

Finally April asks Frank for forgiveness and both find each other again. One day when Freddy and Bernice are visiting them, April holds a little Chinese girl in her arms. She adopted it.

criticism

“With a sensitive tragic comedy about an educated lady in a midlife crisis, the character actress and Oscar winner Helen Hunt ( it couldn't be better ) tries for the first time to direct a full-length feature film. [...] Often more melodious than cheerful, a first choice for the discerning world of women. "

“Actors who are directors and who also work on the script are nothing new. That can go well - just think of classics like Dances with Wolf by Kevin Costner. Or in your pants - see Postman by the same director. Clint Eastwood is even a master at filling multiple jobs at once and still delivering good to excellent performance. Oscar winner Helen Hunt also ended up in this group of egg-laying woolly milk sows in 2007. [...] but she got it wrong: The product is advertised as a comedy, but unfortunately it is neither fish nor meat. "
