Alte Dombach is a district in the Sand district of Bergisch Gladbach .
history
The name Alte Dombach arose from an old settlement and mill name, which was first documented as Tumbach in 1660 . The name Dombach, which is still used today, can already be found in the original cadastre . The Alte Dombach was the first paper mill in the upper Strund Valley . The Alte Dombach paper museum has been located in the old factory buildings since 1999 . The town of Dombach was given the addition of old in 1876, when another paper mill was built a short distance up Strunde with the addition of new , in order to be able to differentiate between the two.
The settlement water name Dombach referred to a small brook that flowed into the Strunde at the level of the old mill. There are different interpretations for the interpretation of the water body name:
- The word Dom could be derived from the Old High German “donan” or the Middle High German “donen” (= swell), which would say something about the flow speed or the amount of water carried.
- Another possibility would be that the name could be understood etymologically taking into account the early modern spelling Tumbach , which would refer to the manor Dombach in the sense of the Middle High German tum / dom (= rule) . In this case, the name of the water would have originated after the founding of the manor and referred to the stream running on manorial land.
