Schmalzgrube is an early modern settlement that arose as a lease from the knight's seat in Lerbach . It is recorded in the original cadastre in the municipality of Bensberg-Freiheit . The basic word pit indicates that mining has been carried out in the area . The defining word melting characterizes the subsequent process of melting ores ( iron , lead and also silver ).
