Architecture and history
Institute building
The old institute building of the Technical University of Darmstadt was in the years 1893 - 1895 , designed by University - Professor Erwin Marx built. The two, originally free-standing buildings do not take on the strict uniformity of the main building opposite .
The two structures are designed differently. The western electrotechnical and physical institute was built with corner projections . The entrance has a flight of stairs in the recessed central part.
The middle of the eastern chemical institute is emphasized by a risalit that takes up the entrance area with a flight of stairs.
In terms of the building materials used, the two institute buildings were matched to the main building. The masonry is made of red bricks . Yellow sandstone was used for the sculptural design .
The two institute buildings were given a third floor in the post-war period .
Lecture hall wing and tower structure
In 1904 the two institute buildings were connected by a lecture hall wing crowned by a tower structure . The architect was the university professor Friedrich Pützer .
The tower structure was destroyed in an air raid in 1944 . The remaining iron roof structure and the sandstone blocks on which clocks were attached were removed in 1953. The lecture hall has been used as a physics library since the 1970s.
The building was completely renovated in 2014/15. The original lecture hall could be restored by relocating the physics library to the new university and state library.

For architectural and city-historical reasons, the old institute building of the Technical University of Darmstadt is a cultural monument .
