In 2017, Benevides received a commendation from the outgoing Speaker of Parliament, Adérito Hugo da Costa , for his services as legal advisor to the Speaker of Parliament.

On June 1, 2018, Benevides was nominated by Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak as Minister of Justice in the Eighth Government , but President Francisco Guterres rejected Benevides, as did ten other candidates for government offices. Guterres raised ethical concerns.
