Emma Sophie Katharina Amalia Schoppe (born October 9, 1791 in Burg auf Fehmarn ; † September 25, 1858 in Schenectady , New York , United States) was a German writer who also used the pseudonyms Adalbert von Schonen , Amalia and Marie . She is primarily known as an author of books for children and young people, but has also written numerous historical novels. Her complete works comprise 200 volumes.

Life

Amalie Weise was born as the daughter of the doctor Friedrich Wilhelm Weise. When her father died in 1798, she came to live with an uncle in Hamburg , until her mother entered into a second marriage in 1802 with the Hamburg merchant Johann Georg Burmeister. In her youth, Amalie Schoppe was mainly concerned with languages ​​and medicine .

In 1814 she married the future lawyer Friedrich Heinrich Schoppe, with whom she had three sons. After the untimely death of her husband in 1829, she provided for the family's maintenance through her lively literary activity. For a time she ran an educational institution for girls in Hamburg together with Fanny Tarnow .

She was friends with Rosa Maria Assing , Justinus Kerner and Adelbert von Chamisso , also took care of the young poet Friedrich Hebbel and found him patrons who enabled him to study. From 1827 to 1846 she published the Pariser Modeblätter , which also contained literary contributions. She was also an employee of numerous magazines and from 1831 to 1839 editor of the youth magazine Iduna . From 1842 to 1845 she lived in Jena , then again in Hamburg. In 1851 she moved to live with her son in the United States and died in Schenectady at the age of 66.

The Amalie-Schoppe-Weg in Hamburg-Barmbek-Nord , in Barmstedt and in Burg (Fehmarn) was named an Amalie-Schoppe-Strasse after Schoppe .
