action

Pushpa is a young woman who, however, cannot give birth to her husband. Reason enough for him to throw her out of the house and marry a second wife. There is already bad whispering about Pushpa in the village and after a false accusation, she is even thrown out of the house by her own mother. A family friend, Nepal Babu, takes her to Calcutta and puts her in a brothel. There, thanks to her beautiful voice, she quickly becomes a star and attracts the attention of the rich alcoholic Anand Babu. He visits Pushpa every night because his own wife completely neglects him.

Years later, Pushpa has built a small existence in the red light district . Finally, a man from her village moves into a neighboring house, but he doesn't want anything to do with her. Nevertheless, she befriends his little son Nandu, who is treated badly by his stepmother. However, she gives him all her love as if Nandu were her own son. She even pays Nandu's medical expenses as his family lives in poor conditions. Pushpa is all the more sad when Nandu moves away with his family.

The years go by and Pushpa has become an old woman. The now adult Nandu is also back in town and he longs to see Pushpa again. After he happens to meet Anand, he accompanies him to her. Both are overjoyed to see each other again and Nandu takes them to live with his small family.

There is also no lack of small socially critical peaks. For example, when the oh-so-pious village culture is shown as a refuge of intrigues, while the supposedly sinful Pushpa prays and only does good. (...)
