Amargosa , officially Portuguese Município de Amargosa , is a medium- sized town in the state of Bahia , Brazil . It is 235 km by road or 167 km by ferry from the capital, Salvador da Bahia . According to the 2010 census , the population was 34,351 people called Amargosens. The Brazilian Statistics Institute estimated the population to grow to 37,241 as of July 1, 2019. The area of ​​the municipality is around 431.7 km², the population density in 2010 was 74 people per km².

Since the local elections in 2016, Julio Pinheiro dos Santos Junior of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) has been the city prefect for the 2017-2020 term .

Until 2017, Amargosa was part of the Jequié microregion of the Centro-Sul Baiana mesoregion with 25 other cities . It ranks 71st out of 417 municipalities in the state.
