Ambrose by Albertini

Ambrosius von Albertini (born August 15, 1894 in Winterthur ; † June 15, 1971 in Zurich ) was a Swiss pathologist and full professor at the Histopathological Institute of the University of Zurich , which he headed from 1949 to 1964. He was also President of the Swiss Red Cross from 1954 to 1968 .

Life

Ambrosius von Albertini was born in Winterthur in 1894 and studied medicine at the Universities of Bern and Zurich . In Zurich, he acquired in 1928 with a thesis on benign Riesenzellgeschwülste the Habilitation for the subject "General Pathology and Pathological Anatomy". In 1933 he became adjunct professor , in 1949 director of the histopathological institute of the University of Zurich and associate professor, and in 1953 full professor.

In addition to his university work, he was instrumental in setting up the Swiss blood donation service and was its president from 1947 to 1970. From 1954 to 1968 he took over the management of the Swiss Red Cross (SRK) and from 1965 to 1966 was the first president of the newly established Henry Dunant Institute . He was also the first president of the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Society .

Ambrosius von Albertini was accepted into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1961 . The Fanconi-Albertini-Zellweger syndrome , which is characterized by congenital heart malformation , osteoporosis and growth retardation , is named after him . He died in Zurich in 1971.
