Hans Haug (lawyer)

Hans Haug (born April 14, 1921 in St. Gallen ; † April 12, 1995 ibid) was a Swiss lawyer and longstanding senior member of the Swiss Red Cross (SRK) and the League of Red Cross Societies as well as a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Life

Hans Haug was born in St. Gallen in 1921 . He studied law at the universities of Geneva and Zurich and graduated in 1946 with a doctorate from the University of Zurich . From 1967 to 1986 he held the chair for international public law at the University of Economics and Social Sciences (HSG) in St. Gallen.

In 1946 he became a member of the Swiss Red Cross. From 1952 to 1967 he took over the office of General Secretary of the SRC, from 1968 to 1982 he was its 15th President. At the same time, by virtue of this office, he was also one of several vice-presidents of the League of Red Cross Societies. From 1971 to 1980 he was a member of the Council of the Henry Dunant Institute , from 1978 to 1980 as its President. In March 1983 he was co-opted as a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross . After leaving the committee in 1991, he was made an honorary member a year later. He died four years later in his hometown.

Hans Haug had a particular influence on academic research and training on the history and legal basis of the Red Cross movement. His book "Menschlichkeit für alle.", Written in collaboration with other authors and published in several languages. The World Movement of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent ”is considered a standard work in this area.
