The Ansbach rampage took place on the morning of September 17, 2009 at the Carolinum grammar school in Ansbach , the capital of the Bavarian district of Middle Franconia . Two students were seriously injured and seven students and one teacher were slightly injured as a result of the rampage at the school .

Sequence of events

The perpetrator Georg R. entered the school building at around 8:30 a.m. armed with an ax , two knives and three Molotov cocktails . He hurled an incendiary device in two classrooms of a ninth and a tenth grade. Only the second incendiary device ignited. The perpetrator then hit the students fleeing from the room with the hatchet at random while he was waiting for them in front of the room. He injured a schoolgirl in the head with an ax; she suffered a life-threatening open head injury . Another student suffered severe burns and eight other students were slightly injured. An 18-year-old student called the police at 8:35 a.m., and the police arrived a short time later. Then this 18-year-old, who has been active in the volunteer fire brigade for several years , started the fire fighting. At that time, the perpetrator had locked himself in a toilet cubicle. When he left, he threatened the police with a knife, who then opened fire and seriously injured the perpetrator with three shots in his arm, stomach and chest at 8:43 a.m.

backgrounds

The perpetrator, who was 18 at the time of the crime, was himself a student at the Carolinum and was receiving psychotherapeutic treatment . He had been planning the killing spree intensively for months and had also prepared a will . Since the beginning of June 2009 he had set a date for the act, but due to technical difficulties he postponed the attack by one day at short notice.

The perpetrator cited the motive that he had been bullied at school and wanted to take his own life. At the same time he wanted to kill as many students and teachers as possible. The prosecution announced that the criminal responsibility to an audit of the student. An arrest warrant for attempted murder could not be carried out shortly after the crime.

No violent computer games, violent videos or firearms were found on the perpetrator. While changes to the gun law or the youth protection act were often debated after earlier rampages , the debate after this rampage was therefore limited to the problem of bullying in Germany's schools.

Effects

In response to the rampage, the police union demanded the introduction of a comprehensive early warning system for schools. Several state governments have declared that they want to increase the number of school psychologists and social workers . The German Federation of Municipal Authorities spoke overlooking the rampage and the timely death of Dominik Brunner for a Council of Experts for youth violence from which the model of the Immigration Council should follow that with the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees cooperates. This council of experts for youth violence should develop concepts , for example for the use of the Internet for anti-violence training , as well as for more security in public spaces. The municipalities also called for a networking of education, justice and youth welfare as well as a security partnership between the police, municipalities, schools and sports associations.

The 18-year-old who made the emergency call was suggested by a classmate for the XY prize for moral courage .

process

The public prosecutor's office in Ansbach accused the suspect, who was 19 at the start of the trial, of attempted murder in 47 cases, attempted manslaughter in two cases, dangerous bodily harm in 13 cases and attempted particularly serious arson . The Ansbach District Court opened the trial on April 22, 2010, and after the indictment had been read out, the public was excluded until the verdict was pronounced. On April 29, 2010, the perpetrator was found guilty of attempted murder in 47 cases and sentenced to nine years' youth imprisonment. In 2018, a relaxation of the security requirements of the accommodation was rejected.
