Amphoe Phaya Mengrai ( Thai อำเภอ พญา เม็ง ราย [ ʔāmpʰɤ̄ːpʰá.jāː mēŋ.rāːj ], pronunciation: ʔāmpʰɤ̄ː pʰá.jāː mēŋ.rāːj ) is a district ( amphoe - administrative district) of Chiang Rai Province . Chiang Rai Province is located in the far north of the northern region of Thailand .

Neighboring counties (clockwise from the west): the Amphoe Wiang Chai , Wiang Chiang Rung , Chiang Khong , Khun Tan and Thoeng of Chiang Rai Province.

history

Phaya Mengrai was founded on May 6, 1981 as a "branch circle " ( King Amphoe ) , consisting of the three tambon Mae Pao, Mae Tam and Mai Ya, which were split off from Thoeng County . On August 12, 1987, Phaya Mengrai was granted full amphoe status.

etymology

The district is named after King Mengrai , the founder of the northern Thai kingdom of Lan Na . He ruled from 1259 to 1317.

The district of Phaya Mengrai is divided into five tambon ("subdistricts" or "parishes"), which are further subdivided into 71 muban ("villages").

There are three municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:

  • Mengrai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล เม็ง ราย ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Mengrai.
  • Phaya Mengrai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล พญา เม็ง ราย ) consisting of the parts of the Tambon Mae Pao, Mengrai.
  • Mai Ya (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ไม้ ยา ) consisting of the complete tambon Mai Ya.

There are also three " tambon administration organizations " ( องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - Tambon Administrative Organizations, TAO)

  • Mae Pao (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล แม่ เปา ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Mae Pao.
  • Mae Tam (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล แม่ ต๋ำ ) consisting of the complete tambon Mae Tam.
  • Tat Khwan (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล ตาด ค วัน ) consisting of the complete tambon Tat Khwan.
