Amphoe Mae Fa Luang (in Thai : อำเภอ แม่ ฟ้า หลวง , pronunciation: ʔāmpʰɤ̄ː mɛ̂ː fáː lǔaŋ ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) in the north of Chiang Rai Province . Chiang Rai Province is located in the far north of the northern region of Thailand .

Neighboring counties (clockwise from the northeast): the Amphoe Mae Sai , Mae Chan and Mueang Chiang Rai of Chiang Rai Province, and Mae Ai of Chiang Mai Province . In the northwest lies the Shan State of Myanmar .

history

The area of ​​today's Mae Fa Luang was founded on April 1, 1992 as a "branch circle" ( King Amphoe ) , consisting of the three Tambon Thoet Thai, Mae Salong Nai and Mae Salong Nok, which were split off from the district of Mae Chan . The fourth Mae Fa Luang Commune was established in 1996. On December 5, 1996, Mae Fa Luang County was granted full Amphoe status.

etymology

The name of the district comes from the Queen Mother Srinagarindra , who was called Mae Fa Luang by the hill tribe of the region .
