building

The district court is located in the building of the former town hall in the old town of Salzwedel. The house was built in 1509 on the foundations of a previous building, presumably the department store of the clothing tailors. The historic long-distance trade routes Magdeburg - Lübeck / Hamburg and Braunschweig - Hitzacker crossed on the square in front of the building .

It was used as a town hall until 1713. In the course of the unification of the old and new town of Salzwedel, the town hall of the new town was used as a common town hall. From 1855 the building served as a judicial building.

In the east gable of the house is a Madonna in a halo and Saint Christopher as the patron saint of the fords.
