André Paul Cailleux (born December 24, 1907 in Paris as André de Cayeux de Senarpont , † December 27, 1986 in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés ) was a French geologist and geographer . He later published under the pseudonym Cailleux , but initially also under his original name Cayeux .

He obtained a broad education as a natural scientist in Paris. In 1931 he received his licentiate in physics, in 1932 in natural sciences and in 1933 in literature and in 1936 his agrégation in natural sciences. In 1942 he received his doctorate in Paris with a thesis on periglacial phenomena in the European Quaternary . He taught at grammar schools in Warsaw , Brest and at the Lycée Marcelin-Berthelot in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés before becoming head of research in physical geography at the Faculté des lettres de Paris . He was then Maître de conférences at the Laboratory for Geomorphology of the École pratique des hautes études in Paris, and from 1958 was Professor of Geology ( Sedimentology ) at the Sorbonne and at Laval University in Québec, Canada. He has also taught in Sherbrooke , Québec , Canada and in Rio de Janeiro .

Cailleux was a specialist in glacial morphology and geomorphology, but dealt with many areas (including biogeography, for example ) and wrote several popular science books, particularly within the Que sais-je? Line. He was the founder of the ACDS ( Association pour la création et la diffusion Scientifique ), which published the journal DIRE.

He conducted field research in the Antarctic (1960/61 he was the French representative in the US Antarctic expeditions), on Greenland , in Canada , on Iceland , in the Sahara , in Brazil and Guyana . André Cailleux spoke seven languages (in addition to French, English, German, Russian, Polish, Spanish and Italian). He was a member of the committee for the "International Quaternary Map of Europe" and President of the "International Commission for Periglacial Morphology".

Together with Jean Tricart, Cailleux was the founder of the Revue de géomorphologie dynamique and co-editor of the journal for geomorphology, the Cahiers géologiques , and from 1963 to 1971 of the Annales de Géographie .

In 1972 he received the Albrecht Penck Medal . He was a member of the Leopoldina (since 1973), the Bavarian and Göttingen Academy of Sciences and the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (since 1955). In 1961 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Polish University of Łódź . The Québéc Quaternary Society ( Association Québécoise pour l'étude du Quaternaire ) awards him the “Cailleux Medal” in his honor. A 50-kilometer crater on the Earth's moon is named after him (60 ° 48 ′ 0 ″ S; 153 ° 18 ′ 0 ″ E).
