Andreas Gillardon the Elder (* August 1661 in Zurich ; † March 31, 1723 in Thusis ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor .

Life

Andreas Gillardon the Elder was born as the son of Peter Gillardon and Elisabetha Wolgemuth in August 1661 in Zurich and was baptized on August 18th. His family originally came from Sondrio . Nothing is known about childhood, school attendance or studies; from 1688 he stayed in Luzein . For a short time he worked as a private tutor in Grüsch and became the private tutor of Florian Sprecher von Bernegg . In 1691 he was accepted into the Evangelical-Rhaetian Synod in Maienfeld , which allowed him to work as a pastor in Graubünden. So in 1695 he became pastor in Grüsch. Since Gillardon was known as a good preacher, the small parish of Valzeina asked the synod in 1698 to appoint Gillardon as pastor. However, he refused because of the low payment.

On July 16, 1696 he married Margreth Täscher von Fanas and they had 11 children. On June 14, 1719, he took over the parish in Igis , after having acted several times as a mediator between the synod and individual pastors and gradually turning to pietism . A year after he moved to Thusis, where he remained pastor, until his death on March 31, 1723. On April 3, his funeral took place under Johannes Ulrich Bavier .

Gillardon, who had promoted Pietism in the canton in the last years of his life, also made sure that many Graubünden residents, including his own children, were able to attend schools and the university in Halle .
