resume

Andreas Meyer passed the Matura type B at the Gymnasium Muttenz in 1980 . He then studied law at the Universities of Basel and Freiburg (Switzerland) . The son of a railroad worker worked as a car cleaner for the SBB during his studies. In 1989 he passed the bar exam in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and in 1995 an MBA at INSEAD in Fontainebleau .

His professional career began in 1990 as a legal advisor at ABB , later as an assistant to the management and project manager at its subsidiary W + E Umwelttechnik in Zurich. From 1996 to 1997 he worked as managing director at the German plant manufacturer Babcock Borsig in Oberhausen and Bitterfeld .

From 1997 to 2006 Andreas Meyer worked in various positions at Deutsche Bahn AG . He joined DB Energie as commercial director and became chairman of the management board in 2000. In 1997 he was entrusted with the task of selling the energy division. Through a renovation, he was able to convince the group of the long-term maintenance of the DB Group's energy division. In 2004 he became chairman of the management board of DB Stadtverkehr . At the same time he was a member of the management of DB Personenverkehr . From 2005 Meyer was also a member of the group management of Deutsche Bahn AG .

On June 23, 2006, Meyer was elected unanimously from 30 candidates to succeed Benedikt Weibel by the SBB Board of Directors with effect from January 1, 2007 . Extensive interviews had been held with ten of the candidates.

In the 2014 financial year, he received a fixed annual salary of 580,000 francs and a performance-related component of 492,000 francs. With a total remuneration of around CHF 1.1 million, Meyer receives the highest salary for an employee in a Swiss company. On September 4, 2019, Meyer announced his resignation from the SBB management by the end of 2020 at the latest. After the election of his successor, he has set his resignation and handover of office for April 1, 2020.

Milestones at SBB from 2007 to 2020

In 2008, the real estate division became an independent division of SBB. At the Bellinzona (IW) industrial plant there was a one-month strike following the announcement of renovation measures. In cooperation with the Canton of Ticino and the City of Bellinzona , it was possible to secure the future of the plant. In the same year, SBB started the largest fleet renewal program (FV-Dosto, modernization of the one-story fleet, IC2000 , Giruno). The acquisitions were aimed at standardizing trains and reducing fleet types. The long-distance Dosto, SBB's largest acquisition, was delayed and its introduction turned into a “forceps delivery”.

In 2011, SBB restructured its pension fund.

In 2013, SBB Cargo was back in the black for the first time in more than 40 years. Between 2013 and 2018, SBB developed eleven regional overall perspectives: cantons, cities and municipalities formulated work programs with SBB for long-term mobility and area development.

In 2014, the SBB in Zurich , in the largest train station in Switzerland , put the first part of the diameter line into operation with a new Löwenstrasse underground station.

In 2015, all employees were equipped with smartphones or tablets.

In 2016, SBB adopted an overarching corporate vision for the first time, which will be further developed in 2019.

Also in 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel was put into operation as the heart of the new NEAT Alpine Transversal ; At 57 kilometers, it is the longest railway tunnel in the world. In 2020, the NEAT will be completed with the commissioning of the Ceneri Base Tunnel .

On August 21, 2019, SBB and BLS decided to work together within the integral long-distance transport concession.

At the end of 2019, the Léman Express started operating as the largest cross-border S-Bahn in Europe.

In the weeks immediately before Meyer's departure in March 2020, SBB massively reduced its offer due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Demand fell by 80 to 90 percent due to mobility restrictions.

On April 1, 2020, Andreas Meyer handed over the operational management of SBB to Vincent Ducrot

Controversy

In the course of Meyer's job change from Deutsche Bahn to SBB, a controversy arose in 2008 about his pay. In the SBB 2007 annual report, it was stated that Meyer received additional support in addition to a sign-up bonus and an extraordinary contribution to the pension fund: SBB Real Estate acquired the German residential building Meyers at initial cost and organized the sale to make it easier for the new top management to move. In addition to the media and public debate about this decision by the Board of Directors, National Councilor Josef Zisyadis initiated a parliamentary question. In total, Meyer earned around 12 million francs until his resignation.

Meyer came under pressure after a death in August 2019 in which a train employee got trapped in a defective door and died. The SBB had known about the defective doors since 2018.

family

Andreas Meyer is married with three children and lives in Muri near Bern . He grew up with his brother in a family of railroad workers in Birsfelden in Basel . His father worked as an SBB wagon master and later as head of the SBB operations workshop in Muttenz BL. Scion Andreas came into contact with the SBB at an early age. Even as a boy he accompanied his father to the Rhine harbor, where he checked truckloads and carried out brake tests. During his law studies he worked as a cleaner in the SBB wagons.
