Andy White (born May 28, 1962 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter and author who has published albums since 1986 and prose and poetry since 1999 .

Life

White began writing poetry and composing songs at the age of nine. He graduated from Methodist College in Belfast and then studied English literature at Robinson College, Cambridge University with a successful degree in 1984. He then performed his songs in and outside his home country, including in Scottish town halls, strip clubs in Los Angeles and the famous London Hammersmith Odeon performed.

He released his first EP Religious Persuasion in 1985 on Stiff Records . This was followed by his first album Rave on Andy White on London Records in 1986 , which was recorded in one go in Randalstown near Belfast. Next up was Kiss the Big Stone in 1988 , which was also recorded in Northern Ireland and featured guest musicians, including Arty McGlynn from the band Van Morrisons . This was his last album for London Records, as he switched to Cooking Vinyl , where Himself was released in 1990 , followed by Out There in 1992 on Warner Music UK . In 1993 he was named "Songwriter of the Year" by the Irish music magazine Hot Press . The album Destination Beautiful , released again in 1994 on Cooking Vinyl, was first distributed in the USA to make White's name known. The reason for this was the new formation ALT, consisting of him and the Split Enz member Tim Finn and the Hothouse Flowers member Liam Ó Maonlaí (all vocals, guitar), whose album Altitude (1995) was released there and accompanied by a tour should be. This was followed in 1996 with Teenage in America, the continuation of the solo work. After further solo albums with the label ALT Recordings, Garageband came out in 2006 as the first release on Floating World Records. White's cosmopolitanism is reflected in the name of the company as well as in the cross-continental genesis of the songs.

In 1999 White published lyrics and poems under the title The Music of What Happens . In 2009 his first prose volume, 21st Century Troubador, was published . Three years later he released the double album 21st Century Troubador , which is based on the book. In 2011 he published his second volume of poetry, Stolen Moments . That same year he worked with his long-time friend, Canadian songwriter Stephen Fearing , on a joint album called Fearing & White . The pieces used for this had accumulated over time. In March 2014 they repeated this with the album Tea and Confidences . In his career he has worked with many greats from the music industry, such as Peter Gabriel , Sinéad O'Connor and John Leckie (producer of, among others, Simple Minds , Muse , Radiohead ). During his numerous tours he played a. a. at the Glastonbury Festival and at rock festivals across the globe in Italy, Spain, South Africa, the USA, Venezuela, Singapore and Australia. Also at international folk festivals in England, Australia and Canada. White currently lives in Melbourne with his son.

The Internet platform Allmusic has given the names alternative singer / songwriter and indie rock . At Discogs , the stylistic attribution changes from folk rock, country rock and indie rock ( Rave on Andy White ) to alternative rock ( Out There ) to folk, world music and country ( How Things Are ). For culturenorthernireland.org it all adds up to “Celtic Soul”.

According to Allmusic, Rave On is a protest album in the tradition of Bob Dylan , which addresses the Northern Ireland conflict. On musicOMH comes songwriter not well off, the music is dull and cliched lyrics. In How Things Are , analyzed the online edition of No Depression magazine, White looks back on his marriage, which lasted 15 years, from getting to know each other before to resolving a divorce afterwards. He plays guitar, bass, ukulele , mandolin and keyboard on it , his 20-year-old son plays drums and percussion , both only supported by one other musician who is responsible for the string instruments .
