Anna Charlotte in 1730

Anna Charlotte, Princess of Lorraine (* May 17, 1714 , † November 7, 1773 in Mons ) was abbess of Remiremont and Sainte-Waudru in Mons and Koadjutrix in the Essen monastery and in the Thorn monastery (Limburg) .

biography

Anna Charlotte was born to Élisabeth Charlotte de Bourbon-Orléans and Leopold von Lorraine . She was one of four children who reached adulthood. In contrast to her sister, who was three years older than her, she remained unmarried.

In 1723 her father wanted her with King Louis XV. to marry, who was still looking for a bride. However, the future French queen was also the Polish princess Maria Leszczyńska . The French princess Henriette Louise von Bourbon decided in favor of the Polish woman as bride for the king. Anna Charlotte's parents were very upset because they felt that a French woman should become queen. In 1726 the young Louis I de Bourbon, duc d'Orléans came into question as bridegroom, but the wedding plans were abandoned for unknown reasons.

On May 10, 1738, Anna Charlotte became abbess of Remiremont Abbey . This title was only granted to women of particularly high nobility, which is said to have filled them with particular pride.

After the death of her mother in 1744, she went to live with her brother Franz Stephan von Lothringen in Vienna, who was Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1745 until his death in 1765 . In Vienna, Anna Charlotte lived in an apartment in Schönbrunn Palace .

She died on November 7th at the age of 59 in Mons , what is now Belgium .
