The grape grass lily ( Anthericum liliago ) or knotless grass lily or large grass lily is a species of the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

The grape grass lily is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 80 cm. The "rhizome" is short, with slightly fleshy roots. The stem is erect or ascending. The foliage leaves , arranged in a basal rosette, are grass-like, flat or slightly runny, tapering to a point, are thin-skinned and comprehensive at the base.

Six to ten flowers are usually arranged in a simple racemose , rarely paniculate , inflorescence . The bracts are membranous, narrow and much shorter. The flower stalks are articulated. The hermaphrodite, star-shaped flowers are threefold. The six equally large bracts are white, three-veined, blunt and much longer than the six stamens . The styles are curved and shorter than the bracts. The capsule fruit is 8 to 10 mm long.

The flowering period extends from May to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30, 32, 60 or 64.

Possible confusion

The similar panicley grass lily ( Anthericum ramosum ) has smaller flowers that are arranged in a pyramidal panicle inflorescence.

Occurrence

The sessile grass lily occurs in southern and central Europe, southern Sweden, Asia Minor and North Africa. Here the species can be found on stony slopes, in sparse forests and on dry grassland at altitudes of up to 1800 meters. It is a character species of the Teucrio-Polygonatetum odorati from the Geranion sanguinei association, but also occurs in associations of the Xerobromion, Festucion valesiacae or Quercion roboris associations.

The grape lily is rarely used as an ornamental plant in stone, natural and heather gardens. It has been in culture since 1596 at the latest. The variety 'Major' is larger overall.

Common names

For the anthericum liliago the names are, or were, in part regionally, Alpenlilie ( Bernese Oberland ) Mountain Lily ( Luzern , Bern ), Erdspinnenkraut , Grassgilgeln , Grass Gilgen , sand lily and white Wiederthon common.
