Anton Babchuk ( Russian Антон Анатольевич Бабчук , Ukrainian Антон Анатолійович Бабчук / Anton Anatolijowytsch Babtschuk * 6. May 1984 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Russian - Ukrainian hockey player . In the course of his career he played with the Calgary Flames , Chicago Blackhawks and Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League , as well as for the HK Awangard Omsk , HK Donbass Donetsk and Salawat Yulayev Ufa in the Continental Hockey League .
Career
Anton Babtschuk was selected as the 21st overall player by the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2002 NHL Entry Draft . In January 2006 he was transferred for Danny Richmond to the Carolina Hurricanes , with whom he won the Stanley Cup for the first time in the same year .
On January 28, 2006, the defender scored his first goal for the Hurricanes. On February 6, 2007, František Kaberle was reactivated after an injury, so that Babchuk was sent to the Hurricanes' farm team, the Albany River Rats . He was the only defender his club could surrender to the River Rats as he was the only defender with a contract for both leagues. Since he didn't want to play for Albany, he was suspended from his club the next day. In the 2007/08 season Babchuk played in the Russian Super League for HK Avangard Omsk . The 2008/09 season Babchuk played again for the Hurricanes. In 2009 he returned to Russia to the HK Awangard Omsk.
In November 2010 he was transferred to the Calgary Flames together with Tom Kostopoulos for Ian White and Brett Sutter .
Due to the NHL lockout Babchuk played between September and December 2012 for HK Donbass Donetsk in the Continental Hockey League .
International
For Russia , Babchuk took part in the U18 Junior World Championships in 2001 and 2002 .
