Anton Theodor Hartmann (born June 25, 1774 in Düsseldorf , † April 20, 1838 in Rostock ) was a German orientalist , philologist and Protestant theologian.

Life

Anton Theodor Hartmann was the son of a businessman, he attended grammar schools in Osnabrück and Dortmund and in 1793 went to study theology at the University of Göttingen , where the orientalist Johann Gottfried Eichhorn was particularly influential for him. After completing his studies, he came back to Düsseldorf in 1796 and worked there as a private teacher. In 1797 he became a Conrector and teacher at the Archigymnasium in Soest, in 1799 Prorector of the Friedrichs-Gymnasium in Herford and from 1804 he was a collaborator and third teacher at the School of Academics (Altes Gymnasium) in Oldenburg.

On Eichhorn's express recommendation, Hartmann was appointed full professor of theology (1st ducal professorship) at the University of Rostock in 1811 , succeeding Werner Karl Ludwig Ziegler . In 1813 he was subsequently promoted to Dr. theol. doctorate, in 1815 he was appointed consistorial councilor and member of the grand ducal consistory , was university librarian in 1814/15 and, from 1818, director of the Rostock coin cabinet. He was dean of the theological faculty five times and rector of the university in the academic year 1825/1826 . In 1834 he was one of the founding members of the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology .

Hartmann's academic research areas were the Old Testament and Oriental Studies. In addition, he worked as a writer, where he also made a special contribution to the interpretation and criticism of the Old Testament and to the knowledge of the oriental languages. With the year 1836 repeated strokes set in, which severely damaged him physically and mentally and finally forced him to complete inactivity. Otto Carsten Krabbe was appointed his successor in 1840 .

Hartmann also dealt with the newer forms of Hebrewism and, in connection with it, with the character of Judaism and the civic status (emancipation) of the Jews. His treatises, which were by no means favorable to the Jews, such as the text: "Johann Andreas Eisenmenger und seine Jewish opponents", which appeared in 1834, led to attacks by the Hamburg Jewish preacher Gotthold Salomon , against which he defended himself in two replies in 1835 and 1836.
