Otto Carsten Krabbe , also Karsten (* December 27, 1805 in Hamburg , † November 14, 1873 in Rostock ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian, university professor and multiple rector of the University of Rostock .

Live and act

Krabbe was the son of the Hamburg merchant Carsten Krabbe. He attended the learned school of the Johanneum in Hamburg and from 1826 studied Protestant theology at the universities of Bonn and Berlin . In Berlin he became a student of Friedrich Schleiermacher and August Neander . In 1829 he was at the University of Goettingen to the Dr. phil. PhD.

After a time as a private teacher, he became professor of biblical philology at the Academic Gymnasium in Hamburg in 1833 and achieved a wide impact in the following years through public lectures and publications. In 1839 he was awarded an honorary theological doctorate on the occasion of the Brandenburg Reformation anniversary by the Theological Faculty of Berlin University. In the same year he turned down an offer at the University of Dorpat .

In 1840 Grand Duke Paul Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin appointed him full professor of theology and university preacher at the University of Rostock. In addition to his lectures on systematic and practical theology, including leading the homiletic seminar, he read regularly about church history and was involved in university affairs. Between 1851 and 1869 he was rector of the university six times and initiated the construction of its main building. With his multi-volume work From the Church and Scientific Life of Rostock , he made the history of the university accessible.

From 1844 to 1847 he was co-editor of the Mecklenburg Church Gazette . Krabbe developed into one of the most important representatives of conservative neo-Lutheranism in Mecklenburg. Since 1851 a member of the Grand Ducal Consistory , wrote crab in the dispute over the liberal views of his Rostock colleague Michael Baumgarten the Konsistorialerachten that Baumgarten, among other combat in Concord accused oath angelobter established church doctrine and broken commitments and 1858 led to Baumgarten's dismissal.

Krabbe was married twice. His first wife Elfriede, b. Voigt, died soon after moving to Rostock († 1842). After seven years as a widower, he married Albertine nee. Heuffemann. His son from his first marriage, Johannes Krabbe (1839–1901), was pastor at Bethlehem Abbey in Ludwigslust .
