Anton Westermayer
Anton Westermayer (born January 2, 1816 in Deggendorf , † December 3, 1894 in Munich ) was a Catholic clergyman, writer and member of the Reichstag.
Life
Anton Westermayer came from a poor background and was an illegitimate child. He studied philosophy and theology at the Ducal Georgianum in Munich. In 1836 he became a member (Renoncenphilister) of the Corps Bavaria Munich . On May 6, 1840, he was ordained a priest in Regensburg.
On May 15, 1840, Westermayer took up the position of cooperator in Cham (Upper Palatinate) , where he quickly made a name for himself as an outstanding speaker. That is why he was assigned the vacant cathedral preacher position in Regensburg in 1842 . However, through his polemical speeches he not only made friends there. On February 1, 1844, Westermayer was deposed as cathedral preacher for insulting majesty (the exact reason is unknown) and transferred as pastor to Laaberberg in the Bavarian province . But in the country it soon became too tight for him: In 1849 Anton Westermayer was elected to the Bavarian Chamber of Deputies for the constituency of Straubing, which meant that he was accepted into the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising. On September 20, 1850, he became pastor of St. Peter in Munich, at the same time clergyman and school inspector, and later also papal house prelate .
From 1847 to 1848 he published the Sunday paper Der Catholic Hausfreund in Regensburg , and from 1847 onwards, several volumes of sermons appeared. He is considered one of the most prolific writers of the 19th century. His works are mainly influenced by the polemics against the Protestants.
From 1849 to 1871 he was a member of the Bavarian Chamber of Deputies and from 1874 to 1884 a member of the Reichstag for the constituency of Upper Bavaria 2 (Munich) for the center . His re-election in 1884 failed due to the candidacy of the conservative building contractor Jakob Heilmann , which cost Westermayer the decisive votes and helped the SPD politician Georg von Vollmar to victory.
Despite his diverse political and literary work, he never forgot the work for the parish entrusted to him: he introduced outpatient nursing and had St. Peter's Church renovated.
In 1890 he was made an honorary citizen of Deggendorf. The day after his death, the City of Munich's magistrate honored him with an obituary.
