Anton von Carlowitz

Christoph Anton Ferdinand von Carlowitz (born June 6, 1785 in Großhartmannsdorf , † January 21, 1840 in Gotha ) was the Conducting Minister of State in Saxe-Coburg and Gotha .

Origin and family

He came from the Saxon noble family von Carlowitz and was the son of the Electoral Saxon lieutenant colonel and district commissioner Hans Carl August von Carlowitz (* 1727–1793) and Johanna Agnes Friederike von der Schulenburg (* 1753–1785). Carl Adolf von Carlowitz (* 1771; † 1837) and Hans Georg von Carlowitz (* 1772; † 1840) were his brothers.

Life

Carlowitz had been in the Saxon judicial and administrative service since 1806. In 1824, Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld appointed him President of the Chamber and Privy Councilor, thereby taking over the management of the business of the Coburg Duchy . As Minister of State, after the exit of the Saxon-Gotha-Altenburg ducal house in 1825 , Carlowitz was the main conductor of the Hildburghausen Treaty in the following year. He also excelled in the internal organization of the young state of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha, but above all in the financial administration. Carlowitz also played a key role in Coburg's marriage policy, which brought the ducal house the royal crowns of Belgium and Portugal in 1831 and 1837 and the dignity of the Prince Consort of Great Britain in 1840 . He held the post of State Minister until his death on January 21, 1840. Carlowitz found his final resting place in Gotha Cemetery II , but the grave is no longer preserved today.
