Antoni Massana i Bertran SJ (* 1890 in Barcelona ; † 1966 in Raïmat ) was a Catalan composer, religious of the Jesuit order and pastoral theologian.

life and work

Antoni Massana studied piano with Enrique Granados , Frank Marshall and composition with Enric Morera , Cristòfor Taltabull and compositional application of folk songs with Felip Pedrell in Barcelona . In 1911 he joined the Jesuit order; He was ordained a priest in 1922 . He then went to Rome and studied church music and Gregorian chant ; he completed his studies in Munich and Solesmes .

Massana left behind an extensive, varied work. The Canigó operas (1934, premiered in 1936 and 1953 in the Liceu de Barcelona) based on a text by Josep Carner based on a work by Jacint Verdaguer are musically influenced by Richard Wagner . Massana also recorded these works on phonograms. The opera Nuredduna (1947) based on a libretto by Miquel Forteza based on the work La deixa del geni grec by Miquel Costa i Llobera is also noteworthy . Massana also left oratorios such as Montserrat (1925), Xavier (1932), La creació (1946) and Ignis flagrans (1951), as well as symphonic works such as Fantasia (1929) and Elegia a Debussy (1930).

From 1949 to 1953 he presented his works in South America, initially in Brazil. In addition to his pastoral work, he conducted his works in Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo and Recife . The following year he settled in Buenos Aires , where he wrote the Sinfonía in C minor (1952) and a concerto for piano (1953). In the Argentine capital he also presented the oratorio La Creació , which premiered in Barcelona in 1946 . He also wrote pieces for piano, motets , cantatas for violin and organ, and songs.

Massana saw himself as a neo-romantic , as the one who continued the German schools of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss ; he also recognized the influence of Claude Debussy in his work.
