Apostolic Nuncio to Mexico

The Apostolic Nuncio in Mexico is the permanent representative of the Holy See (i.e. the Pope as subject of international law) to the government of the State of Mexico .

Pius IX sent Monseñor Luigi Clementi , titular archbishop of Damascus , as the first nuncio to Mexico and Central America. When Clementi wanted to present his letter of accreditation in Mexico in November 1851 , a majority of 53 to 33 votes in parliament decided that Pius IX. not recognized. On January 12, 1861, Benito Juarez , Luigi Clementi with Joaquín Francisco Pacheco and Felipe Neri del Barrio, had the Guatemalan ambassador deported. Girolamo Prigione was expected by Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo at Puebla Airport on May 24, 1993 and was the first apostolic delegate to be accredited as nuncio to the government of Carlos Salinas de Gortari .
