George Joseph Caruana

George Joseph Caruana (born April 23, 1882 in Sliema , Malta , † March 25, 1951 in Philadelphia ; also Jorge José Caruana ) was a Maltese Roman Catholic clergyman, archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

He was the son of Amabile Caruana (1853-1904) and his wife Carmela Sammut (1856-1923). George Joseph Caruana attended St. Ignatius's College in Birkirkara and Capranica College before continuing his studies in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University . On October 28, 1905, he was ordained a priest in Malta by the Bishop of Malta , Archbishop Pietro Pace . In 1907 George Joseph Caruana went to Manila , where he became secretary of the Apostolic Delegate Archbishop Ambrogio Agius . From October 1907 he turned to missionary tasks in the Philippines . In 1910 he went to Brooklyn as a parish priest . During World War I he served as the United States Army chaplain in the Panama Canal Zone and until 1919 in Puerto Rico .

Pope Benedict XV appointed him Bishop of Puerto Rico on August 5, 1921 . He received his episcopal ordination on October 28, 1921, the Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina , Antonio Cardinal Vico ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Clemente Micara , Apostolic Nuncio in Czechoslovakia, and Archbishop Giovanni Maria Zonghi , President of the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy .

On December 22, 1925, George Joseph Caruana was appointed Apostolic Delegate for the West Indies and Mexico and the following day made Titular Archbishop of Sebastea . From 1927 to 1930 he was an intern in Haiti. From 1935 to 1947 he worked as apostolic nuncio in Cuba, at the same time he was nuncio in Puerto Rico.
