The Apostolic Vicariate of Alexandria in Egypt ( lat. : Apostolicus Vicariatus Alexandria Aegypti ) is in Egypt located Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate with headquarters in Alexandria .
history
The Vicariate was founded on May 18, 1839 from the cession of territory by the Vicariate Apostolic Syria, Egypt, Arabia and Cyprus as Vicariate Apostolic Egypt and Arabia , changed its name to Vicariate Apostolic Alexandria in Egypt on January 27, 1951 and after it on November 30th 1987 had taken up the Apostolic Vicariate Heliopolis in Egypt and Port-Said , in Alexandria in Egypt (-Heliopolis in Egypt-Port-Said) . When it was founded in 1839, the Vicariate comprised the areas of Egypt, Sudan and the Arabian Peninsula. In 1851 the Vicariate gave the area of the Arabian Peninsula to the Apostolic Vicariate Galla . The areas south of Egypt were separated from Central Africa on April 3, 1846 as the Apostolic Vicariate with its seat in Khartoum.

The Vicariate, which now covers all of Egypt, still had 32,000 Catholics of the Latin rite in 1949 , but their number continued to decrease, so that in 2002 it was only 9,000. The number of parishes also fell from 28 to 17. At the same time, the number of local diocesan priests rose from 3 to 7 and that of religious priests from 119 to 159. Only the number of religious sisters fell from 915 to 776.
In 1980, the two vicariates accepted were considerably smaller in number. Heliopolis had only 1,600 Catholics in 5 parishes and the Port-Said Vicariate had 375 Catholics in 3 parishes. If you contrast the number of priests , the numbers are incredible. Because Heliopolis had 4 diocesan and 66 religious priests (22 Catholics per priest) and Port-Said 4 religious priests (93 Catholics per priest).
Other Catholic churches
In addition to the vicariate responsible for the Catholics of the Latin rite , there are eparchies of the Eastern Churches united with Rome in Egypt . The largest among them is the Coptic Catholic Church, headed by the Patriarch of Alexandria .
