Aquilino Cardinal Bocos Merino CMF (born May 17, 1938 in Canillas de Esgueva , Spain ) is a Spanish Roman Catholic religious .

Life

Aquilino Bocos Merino joined the Order of the Claretians and made his first profession on August 15, 1956 . On August 15, 1959, he made his perpetual profession. After studying philosophy and Catholic theology at the Claretian seminary , Bocos Merino received the sacrament of ordination on May 23, 1963 . At the Pontifical University of Salamanca , he was in philosophy doctorate and acquired a diploma in clinical psychology .

From 1964 to 1967 Aquilino Bocos was Merino Spiritual at the Colegio Mayor Maronita in Salamanca . Then he was until 1980 spiritual at the Claretian seminary, teacher in various educational institutions of his order and director of the magazine Vida Religiosa . He was also a co-founder of the Theological Institute for Consecrated Life in Madrid and director of the Regina Apostolorum school .

Subsequently, Bocos Merino was Provincial of the Claretians in Castile until 1985 before he became a member of the General Council of the Claretians. From 1991 to 2003 Bocos Merino was Superior General of the Claretians. He also took part in the ninth ordinary general assembly of the Synod of Bishops on Consecrated Life (1994) and in the second special assembly for Europe (1999). Bocos Merino was also a member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life from 1994 to 2004 .

On May 20, 2018, Pope Francis announced his appointment as cardinal . On May 31, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him Titular Archbishop of Urusi . He was ordained episcopate on June 16 of the same year by the Archbishop Emeritus of Pamplona y Tudela , Cardinal Fernando Sebastián Aguilar CMF. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Madrid , Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra , and the Archbishop of Valladolid , Cardinal Ricardo Blázquez .

In the consistory of June 28, 2018 Pope Francis took him as a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonie Santa Lucia del Gonfalone in the College of Cardinals on, which Bocos Merino gave his titular again. The occupation of his title diakonia took place on January 26, 2019.

Motto

The episcopal motto "Ut vitam habeant" (so that they have life) is a quote from the Gospel of John ( John 10,10  EU ).
