Erdeed ( Romanian Ardud , Hungarian Erdőd ) is a small town in the Satu Mare district in north-western Romania .

location

Erdeed is located in a hilly region in northwestern Romania. The district capital Satu Mare is about 15 km north.

history

The oldest archaeological finds in the region date from the Bronze Age .

Erdeed was first mentioned in a document in 1215 under the name Herdeud .

In 1378 the place became a regional administrative center. In 1481 a castle was built northwest of Erdeed. This soon lost its military importance and was converted into a castle from 1730. The castle fell into disrepair in the 19th century and was finally destroyed in World War II.

In the 18th century, like in other regions of Sathmar County, Germans - the Sathmar Swabians - settled in Erdeed .

Until 1918 the place belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary . After the First World War he came to Romania, from 1940 to 1944 temporarily back to Hungary as a result of the Second Vienna Arbitration . In 2006 Erdeed received city status.

The most important branches of the economy are the timber, construction, agriculture and trade.
