Negreşti-Oaş (formerly Negreşti ; Hungarian Avasfelsőfalu or Felsőfalu ) is a small town in the Satu Mare district in Romania .

location

Negreşti-Oaş is located in northwest Romania on the western edge of the Eastern Carpathians , in a valley basin ( Depresiunea Oaş ), on the upper reaches of the Tur river between the mountains Oaş in the north and Gutâi in the south. The district capital Satu Mare is located about 45 km southwest of Negreşti-Oaş.

history

Negreşti-Oaş was first mentioned in a document in 1490. It was an important station on the trade route from the Sathmar region to the Maramures , on which mainly salt was transported. Until 1918 the place belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary or Austria-Hungary . After the First World War he came to Romania, from 1940 to 1944 temporarily back to Hungary as a result of the Second Vienna Arbitration . In 1964 Negreşti-Oaş received city status.

The main branches of the economy are agriculture, tourism, the food, construction, textile and wood industries.

Negreşti-Oaş was the largest Romanian settlement in the area at the time of Austria-Hungary . In 1880, 2771 people lived in the area of ​​today's city, including 2284 Romanians, 216 Germans and 209 Hungarians . In 1992 the highest population was registered with 16,648. At the 2002 census, Negreşti-Oaş had 13,871 inhabitants, including 13,195 Romanians, 553 Hungarians, 72 Roma , 15 Germans and 12 Ukrainians .

Negreşti-Oaş is on the railway line from Satu Mare to Bixad . Around six pairs of trains run here every day. The National Road Drum National 19 runs through the city from Sighetu Marmației to Oradea . There are regular bus connections to Satu Mare and Baia Mare , among others .
