The Argos was a fisheries research vessel owned by the Swedish Fiskeriverket (Central Fisheries Authority).

history

The ship was built in 1974 by Kalmar Varv. In 1993 it was extensively modernized in Falkenberg . It was used in particular in the Baltic Sea , Kattegat and Skagerrak and the eastern North Sea to record fish stocks and for hydrographic and oceanographic measurements.

After asbestos was found on board and a conversion of the ship turned out to be too costly due to its age, the ship was decommissioned in 2011. In August 2012 it was sold to Denmark for scrapping . The ship was scrapped at Fornæs Skibsophug in Grenaa in 2013 . A new building is planned as a replacement. In the meantime, the previous users are particularly turning to the Danish research vessel Dana .

Technical data and equipment

It was powered by two alpha two - stroke diesel engines , each with around 662  kW output . The engines acted on a propeller . The ship reached a speed of 14  knots (11 knots were achieved with only one drive motor). For electricity generation three diesel generator sets were a total of 1,550  kVA apparent power available, of MaK - four-stroke engines were driven. In the bow and stern areas , an electrically powered transverse thruster control system with an output of 220 kW each was installed.

The ship was built as a stern catcher without a tow . The hull of the ship was reinforced with ice ( ice class C). The ship could stay at sea for 21 days.

The superstructures were in the midship area. There was a crane in front of and behind the superstructures. At the stern there was a rear boom , which u. a. was required for launching and hauling in the trawl .

30 beds were available on board. The ship was designed for operation with up to 15 crew members and the accommodation of 12 scientists.

The ship, which was named after the giant from Greek mythology , was Sweden's largest research ship to date.
