The Arklow R-class is a thirteen-unit class of coasters . The ships were built at the Dutch shipyard Barkmeijer Stroobos in Leeuwarden for the Irish shipping company Arklow Shipping and delivered between the end of 2001 and the end of 2007.
The ships are from a four-stroke - six-cylinder - diesel engine of the manufacturer Caterpillar driven. The MaK 6M25 motors have an output of 1,499 kW and act on a controllable pitch propeller via a reduction gear . The ships can thus reach 11.5 kn . Two diesel engines from the manufacturer Valmet , each with 150 kW output, are available for power generation, which drive two generators from the manufacturer Stamford with 175 kVA apparent power each , one of which acts as an emergency generator. There is also a shaft generator with an apparent power of 435 kVA, driven by the main engine with an output of 350 kW . The ships are equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster with an output of 250 kW.
The deckhouse is in the rear of the ships. It has four decks . On board there are eight chambers for the crew and u. a. Galley , mess and storage space. The bridge is closed over the entire width including the cams . The hold is in front of the deckhouse . The hatch is 62.4 meters long and 11.5 meters wide and closed with ten pontoon hatch covers that can be moved using a hatch cart. The loading space is box-shaped over a length of 51.6 meters. The ships are equipped with two bulkheads with which the hold can be divided. The bulkheads can be set up in nine positions. The cargo space is 5873 m³. The tank top can be loaded with 15 t / m², the hatch cover with 1.5 t / m². The ships are prepared for the transport of containers . The container capacity is 138 TEU . 102 TEU of this can be loaded in the space and 36 TEU on deck. A breakwater is located in front of the hold to protect deck cargo from overflowing water.
The ships sailed under the flag of Ireland with home port Arklow. The four units built first later came under the flag of the Netherlands with their home port in Rotterdam .
