Life
Arsham Shahinyan's parents, Artasches and Woski Shahinjan, were Armenian intellectuals from Moks (now Bahçesaray , Turkey ). In 1915, because of the Armenian genocide , they had to leave their homeland and flee to Yerevan.
Already at a young age Arsham Shahinyan discovered his passion for art and his artistic talent. He gained his first experience in the working group for sculpture at the Pioneer Palace in Yerevan. In 1951 Arsham Shahinyan graduated from the Yerevan Art School (later “Yerevan State Art and Theater University”, today “ Yerevan State Art Academy ”, Armenian Երեւանի գեղարվեստի պետական ակադեմիա Yerewani Gegharwesti petakan akademia ).
After his successful graduation, the artist was appointed to the art school " Panos Terlemesjan " (today "State Art College Panos Terlemesjan ") and worked there from 1951 to 1980 as a lecturer and from 1978 to 1980 as the rector of the institution. From 1969 he also taught as a lecturer, since 1990 as a professor at the "State Art and Theater University of Yerevan". He was one of the most important teachers of sculpture and art in these educational institutions.
Works
Arsham Shahinyan's works belong to the genre of monumental, monumental-decorative and three-dimensional pictorial works. Arsham Shahinyan has created a number of sculptures and monuments in the course of his many years of artistic activity, which have found their place of honor in the history of 20th century art .
In 1967 Arsham Shahinyan created the monument to the famous master of medieval Armenian book illumination, Toros Roslin . The basalt sculpture, in the classical style, stands in front of the entrance to the Institute for Ancient Manuscripts “Matenadaran”. This forms an ensemble with five other sculptures of historical personalities from science and culture.
One of the most famous works by Arsham Shahinyan is the Sardarapat Memorial. The work was completed in 1968 in collaboration with the sculptors Ara Harutjunjan , Samwel Manasjan and the architect Rafajel Israjeljan . The memorial is located 10 km from Armavir and is dedicated to the victory of the Armenian people over the Turkish army in the Battle of Sardarapat in 1918. The monument is one of the best monuments and monumental sculptures of the present.
In 1980 Arsham Shahinyan created a memorial to the fallen soldiers of World War II together with the architect Arakel Gabrieljan . The monument is located in Meghradzor.
The memorial in memory of the builders of the Armenian district of the Ukrainian city of Slavutich is one of Arsham Shahinyan's most important works. This district was built under the direction of the architect Stefan Lasarjan in 1988. It should serve as a home for the resettled workers and their families from the area of the Chernobyl disaster .
Arsham Shahinyan took an active part in numerous exhibitions and competitions and was honored several times with the highest state awards.
The well-known writer Marietta Schahinjan describes in her book "A Journey through Soviet Armenia" one of the works of Arsham Schahinjan as "... one of the best sculptural works of recent years".
