Arthur Hellmer

Arthur Hellmer (born June 29, 1880 in Vienna as Arthur Ehrlich ; † January 16, 1961 in Hamburg ) was an Austrian actor , director and general manager .

Life

Arthur Hellmer, artist name of Arthur Ehrlich, born in Vienna in 1880 as the offspring of a Jewish family who immigrated from Austria-Silesia , studied at the Vienna Conservatory. At the beginning of his artistic career he received acting roles in Barmen (1901/02), Lübeck (1902 to 1904) and at the Schauspielhaus Frankfurt (1904 to 1910).

In 1911, with the help of private donations, he founded the New Theater in Frankfurt am Main together with Max Reimann, which began operating on September 11 of the same year with a production of Heinrich Kleist's Zerbrochnem Krug . Hellmer was the sole director from 1920, the New Theater was sponsored by a stock corporation , and between 1925 and 1926 director of the Lessing Theater in Berlin , and as a promoter of the expressionist drama he campaigned in particular for Georg Kaiser , most of whose works he premiered.

In 1936 Arthur Hellmer emigrated to Vienna because of his Jewish origins, where he took over the management of the Theater an der Wien with great success . In 1938 Hellmer emigrated to England after he had sold the New Theater to the city of Frankfurt after the November pogrom in 1938 . After his return in 1946, the city considered Hellmer the rightful owner and bought the theater from him in 1948 for a reasonable contribution. In 1946 Helmer was entrusted with the management of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, which he held until 1949. The German premiere of Zuckmayer's Des Teufels General was a particular highlight of this artistic director .

Arthur Hellmer died in 1961 at the age of 80 in Hamburg, he was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery .
