Arthur Horsthuis

Arthur Horsthuis AA , also Arturo Gerrit João Hermanus Maria Horsthuis , (born June 17, 1912 in Diepenveen , Netherlands ; † April 11, 1979 ) was a Dutch religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Jales .

Life

Gerrit Jan Hermanus Maria Horsthuis was born as one of twelve children of Hermanus Johannes Josephus Horsthuis and Hendrika Satink. After attending school in Boxtel, he entered the novitiate of the Assumptionist order on October 4, 1931 in Taintegnies, Belgium . On October 5, 1932, he made his first and exactly three years later his perpetual profession . After studying theology at the Catholic University of Leuven , he received the sacrament of ordination on February 26, 1939 from the Mechelen auxiliary bishop Étienne Joseph Carton de Wiart .

He initially worked as a teacher and educator in Boxtel and studied missiology in Nijmegen from 1941 to 1944 . In 1946 he went to Brazil with six confreres, where he initially worked at the boys' seminar and at the cathedral of the diocese of São José do Rio Preto . Until December 1958 he worked for ten years in the parish pastoral care in Além-Paraíba and Fernandópolis, where he campaigned for the construction of the parish church. He was then Vice Provincial of the Brazilian Assumptionists based in São Paulo .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on February 2, 1960 as the first bishop of the two months earlier established diocese of Jales . The Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil , Archbishop Armando Lombardi , donated him episcopal ordination on June 29 of the same year in the chapel of the Assumptionist College in São Paulo . Co- consecrators were Lafayette Libânio , Bishop of São José do Rio Preto, and Paulo Rolim Loureiro , Auxiliary Bishop in São Paulo . The inauguration in the diocese of Jales took place on August 15, 1960. Arthur Horsthuis took part in the first and second session of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

His various activities in the construction of the new diocese included the establishment of a radio station for the proclamation of the Faith, the development of the diocese administration and the design of the cathedral, which he did not see completion during his term of office. He initiated the development of type churches in order to save building costs when building the parishes. He paid particular attention to the rural population, whom he helped set up rural unions.

Because of his bad health, Pope Paul VI. on November 7, 1968 his early resignation and appointed him titular bishop of Hippo Diarrhytus . He renounced the titular seat on March 16, 1971.

After his resignation, he underwent medical treatment in his home country for a year and then returned to Brazil, where he initially worked in the Archdiocese of São Paulo and from 1972 in the Archdiocese of Ribeirão Preto . The Archbishop of Ribeirão Preto appointed him Episcopal Vicar .

In September 1978 he traveled to the Netherlands for vacation and medical treatment. Here his health deteriorated and he died on April 11, 1979 in the Boxtel hospital of circulatory failure. His grave is in the Assumptionist cemetery in Boxtel.
